A glory hole can cost $30,000–$80,000. A glass furnace $15,000–$150,000. An annealing oven $3,000–$25,000. When this equipment fails — and it will eventually — a standard property policy won't cover the repair. Equipment breakdown insurance is what does.
Standard commercial property covers fire and theft. It does NOT cover equipment failure — the most common and expensive loss for glassblowing studios. When your glory hole's burner system fails, when an annealing oven's controller shorts out, when your furnace refractory cracks — equipment breakdown coverage responds. Property insurance says no.
Yes. We can typically insure older equipment, often at actual cash value (depreciated) rather than replacement cost. We may request a condition statement or photos. Age alone doesn't make equipment uninsurable.
Equipment breakdown covers the kiln itself. Loss of work-in-progress or raw glass stock in the kiln at the time of failure is typically covered under commercial property (contents) insurance, sometimes under a specific 'stock in process' coverage.
Inland marine (tools and equipment floater) covers your equipment while away from your studio — at shows, galleries, or on the road. This is separate from equipment breakdown but equally important for mobile or show-attending artists.
